.DISCUSSION...

Strong low pressure in the eastern Pacific continues to pivot towards the region per latest moisture-channel imagery. This feature will be responsible for ushering in fall-like weather this week, featuring breezy afternoon winds, midweek showers and t-storms, and much cooler temperatures.

Winds will become breezy in the afternoons through Tuesday in response to the approaching low pressure area. Southwest to west gusts peak around 25-30 mph today, increasing to 30-40 mph Monday afternoon. Locally enhanced gusts of 40-50 mph will be possible in wind prone areas. Be prepared for wind impacts to travel and recreation early this week. Areas of elevated fire weather conditions are likely each day with holdover fires possibly flaring up amid increased winds.

Our ongoing cooling trend continues through Wednesday and will yield fall-like temperatures from midweek onward. Daytime highs will only reach the 60s and 70s after Monday with freezing overnight lows in the Sierra around midweek. Meanwhile, chances of showers and thunderstorms trend upward as soon as Monday -- mainly from the Tahoe Basin into NE California -- and spread eastward Tuesday through Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday will likely feature the greatest coverage of showers and thunderstorms with widespread odds of 30-60%. In fact, it may even be cold enough to allow snow flurries on highest Sierra peaks on both days! Shower and storm chances linger into the weekend, but a drying trend will reduce odds and coverage. Temperatures will also slowly warm as we head into the weekend, but will remain below average through the weekend.

.AVIATION...

The primary weather concern today will be SW/W surface gusts of 20- 30 kts during the afternoon. Periods of LLWS impacts are likely through the afternoon at Sierra Front terminals where winds will be strongest. FL100 winds also increase this evening, perhaps resulting in mountain wave turbulence overnight. Winds increase Monday afternoon, resulting in additional LLWS impacts and mountain wave turbulence.

Otherwise, increased smoke production from the Garnet fire will further impact slantwise visibilities -- especially at KMMH where smoke will be most concentrated.
