.DISCUSSION...

This morning`s visible satellite aboard GOES-West shows that smoke has settled in across much of Mono, Mineral and southern Lyon counties this morning as the Garnet Fire continues. A Dense Smoke advisory has been issued for the area, and your local air quality can be monitored at fire.airnow.gov. Smoke will linger into the afternoon, when southwesterly breezes pick up. Gusts may reach 25-35 mph for valleys, with ridge winds approaching 50-60 mph. As these winds will cause travel and recreation concerns, a Lake Wind Advisory has been issued for both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake today. This increase in breezes will taper after sunset, allowing smoke to filter back into the Mono/Mineral/S.Lyon valleys by morning. We will continue to monitor the fire and associated smoke as the week progresses.

The breezes we will see tonight are a precursor to an incoming low pressure system currently churning in the Pacific off the northern California coast. Shower chances will begin to increase across northern California this afternoon and evening. This feature will be responsible for much of the sensible weather this week. Shower chances will reach a maximum of 40-70% across northeastern California and northwestern Nevada by midweek. Additionally, this low pressure is bringing in some cooler temperatures, especially for our neighbors in Sierra communities. Overnight lows this week will hover near freezing for Sierra valleys, with a few snowflakes possible on the highest peaks Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, amounts will be light.

As the weekend approaches the chances for showers will taper, the temperatures will rebound and the winds will relax. Saturday looks to be the day if you are interested in dry, clear skies, average temperatures and light winds. Sunday, another opportunity for showery weather arrives as a series of shortwaves takes aim at our region. HRICH

.AVIATION...

* Most area terminals expect VFR conditions today, the primary weather concern today will be southwest/west surface gusts of 20-30 kts during the afternoon. Mountain wave turbulence and LLWS impacts will also be likely as well with these winds. Otherwise, mostly dry conditions are expected across the region today.

* KMMH looks to be the outlier TAF site that will see sub-VFR conditions mostly due to smoke filtering into Mono/Mineral/S.Lyon counties from the Garnet Fire in CA. There may be a brief break between 8/22Z-9/04Z when winds pick up allowing for VFR conditions at KMMH, but models show smoke returning and lowering the visibility once again tonight. Increased smoke production from the Garnet Fire will also further impact slantwise visibilities across the region.-078/HRICH
