.DISCUSSION...
Clear skies prevail areawide today with afternoon highs in the 80s and mid to upper 70s for valleys and higher elevations, respectively. Said high temperatures will remain through the majority of the next week. Dry conditions today will continue through at least Wednesday afternoon before a closed low pressure system brings increased shower chances.
Light showers can be expected for the Tahoe Basin and southward along the Eastern Sierra starting as early as Wednesday evening (15-30% chance). Showers may linger in the aforementioned areas overnight before increasing in probability and areal coverage Thursday. By Thursday afternoon, there is a 30-65% chance for showers along the Eastern Sierra from Alpine county through Mono county. The highest probabilities will be confined along the highest peaks. However, chances (15-45%) also expand eastward into the Basin and Range, south of I-80. As of now, there is a 10% chance for showers in Reno on Thursday. This system is trending drier as compared to the system last weekend; rainfall totals will be less than half an inch along the peaks of the Sierra with 0.1-0.3" expected in Alpine, Mineral, and Mono counties.
Chances for embedded thunderstorms Thursday afternoon are also possible, but will be isolated to the Sierra again. As we move towards the weekend, we will see continued shower and thunderstorm chances (15-25%) for Mono and Mineral counties. Models project the aforementioned closed low to spin over southern CA this weekend, allowing for storm chances to continue.
Monday and beyond, things start to look a bit muddier. Models hint at a low pressure dropping down from Alaska, which may bring cooler temperatures, increased shower chances, and breezy winds. However, there is plenty of uncertainty. Stay tuned to see how everything shakes out.
