.DISCUSSION...Through Monday.

Ridging builds over the region today and tomorrow while upper level low pressure remains off the California coast. This setup brings mostly clear skies and near average temperatures for late September. A few light showers may develop over the Sierra on Wednesday afternoon and evening as the low starts to move east. Breezy northerly winds develop today and tomorrow in the afternoon, but no impacts are expected.

A major change in the weather pattern is on track for the latter half of this week and early next week as the upper level low moves east into California and Nevada. Models are consistently showing an increase in precipitable water starting Wednesday night, reaching 150 to 200 percent of normal. However, since it is late September and past the peak of monsoon season, this translates to PWATs in the 0.5 to 1.0 inch range for most locations. There is still great discrepancy between models as to how much precipitation will actually reach the surface. The NBM 25th percentile QPF shows little to no precipitation through the event, while the 75th percentile shows enough precipitation for isolated minor impacts. Precipitation totals and impacts will largely depend on the strength, track, and speed of the low as it moves east, and the availability of moisture going into the weekend, including the ability to tap into additional tropical moisture. Heavy rainfall is one of the primary threats given anomalously high moisture areawide. The WPC included most of the forecast area north of Interstate 40 in a Marginal Excessive Rainfall Outlook on Thursday, along with northwestern Arizona and far southern Nevada on Friday, and the entire forecast area south of the Great Basin on Saturday.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Mainly light winds are expected overnight, less than 6 knots, but are expected to favor a west to northwest direction after 08z and continuing through 15z. Winds will then shift to a northeast direction late morning and afternoon. Tomorrow`s winds should generally be lighter, but there is a 50 percent probability of sustained winds over 10 knots between 16Z and 20Z. Skies should be mostly clear aside from FEW mid level clouds tomorrow afternoon.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Winds across the region will fall below 10 knots with the exception of KIFP where speeds over 10 knots continue overnight. Gusty east to southeast winds in the Owens Valley between 10-18 knots will diminish after 08z and gradually become light and variable overnight. Additional gusty winds pick up at KBIH, DAG, and KIFP tomorrow morning and afternoon. Mostly clear skies are expected through the forecast period aside from FEW mid level clouds tomorrow.
