Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 228 AM MDT Wed Sep 24 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Warming trend continues to Thursday afternoon, then stays around 10 degrees above normal through Monday.

- High pressure will keep wind weak through at least Monday morning.

- Next slight chance for precipitation Sunday afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Issued at 151 AM MDT Wed Sep 24 2025

High pressure peaks today, then west coast troughing starts pushing down from the Canadaian coast on Thu. This will make upper level wind more southwest and increase slightly Thu and stronger Fri. The trough is too far north to bring any sort of precipitation, but by Fri afternoon the upper level wind is back to a cooler northwesterly flow.

Temperatures will continue to warm through Thu, then level off for Fri and the weekend. Wind will also gradually increase, but not expecting wind to get to any significant threshold.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Issued at 151 AM MDT Wed Sep 24 2025

High pressure will start to give way Sun afternoon to a trough coming in from the west, with a slight chance of precipitation over the southern third of the forecast area. For the rest of the forecast area, the precipitation returns Mon afternoon, at slight chance to low chance probabilities. Thunderstorms are also a slight chance risk for Sun and Mon afternoons/evenings. The trough axis does not get to the forecast area until Tue night, so precipitation continues at chance to likely Mon night and Tue.

The approaching trough will bring an unsteady cooling trend with clouds and cooler air, but afternoon highs continue above normal, perhaps getting to near normal on Tue. Overnight lows stay at or above normal.

Wind is stronger, but again no significant wind is expected outside of thunderstorms. Gusts may exceed 20KT for Tue.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z THURSDAY/... Issued at 1035 PM MDT Tue Sep 23 2025

Expect continued strong high pressure through the period and for the foreseeable future. Clear skies and overall light winds are expected.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 151 AM MDT Wed Sep 24 2025

Warming trend under high pressure continues through Thu, with afternoon humidity staying in the vicinity of 15 percent for minimum readings. Wind will stay light, although it will increase slightly with a southwest to west component instead of the variable directions of late. A risk of showers and thunderstorms returns to areas south of the Snake River and in the Bear Lake basin on Sun afternoon, but a trough coming in from the west will spread it all over the region by Mon afternoon. The trough itself will be crossing through the forecast area on Tue, with the highest threat of showers and thunderstorms. As the trough approaches, Sun will see afternoon humidity and overnight humidity rise. Wind will increase with the approach of the trough, with gusts above 20 mph developing by Tue.
