Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX 1259 AM CDT Sun Sep 14 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Above normal afternoon highs continue through the weekend into next week.

- Low end chances for showers and storms along the Rio Grande Sunday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT)...

A mid-level trough over Utah will slide east Sunday, and with weak southwest flow aloft over the Rio Grande Plains, some afternoon showers and storms may develop in the mid to late afternoon hours, but hi-res guidance is not particularly high on coverage today, but any rain is appreciated over the drier sections of the Rio Grande Plains. Temperatures will remain near or above seasonal normals, with afternoon highs in the lower to middle 90s. Late Sunday night into earl Monday, mid-level ridging will start to work into the region, drying things back out and resulting in afternoon highs again in the mid 90s.

&&

.LONG TERM (TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY)...

Ridging will strengthen over the region on Tuesday, but quickly weakens and gets shoved south and west on Wednesday as another trough dives southeastward into the High Plains states. We may get some increased clouds and low end rain chances out of this system, but it looks to be too far north to affect our weather too much. Nevertheless, will carry low end PoPs in the 20% range Thursday and Friday for the possibility of precipitation in the long term. Otherwise, warm and dry conditions are expected through the long term forecast period.

&&

.AVIATION (06Z SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY)...

Showers across western Val Verde county have weakened as some new convection is noted well to the southwest of DRT. For the overnight hours, we still expect to see MVFR cigs develop from SAT and SSF westward to DRT. A few of the models show decreased potential for MVFR clouds at SAT and SSF. However, based on persistence and forecast soundings showing plenty of southeasterly flow and moisture in the lowest 5k ft, we will continue MVFR for SAT and SSF. We have left the forecast VFR at AUS and will continue to monitor. For this afternoon, some convection may approach DRT from the west. With only isolated coverage anticipated, we will not mention in the forecast at this time.
