.DISCUSSION...

Cooler air has spread across CA-NV after Monday`s initial cold front passage. Most of the storm activity has diminished, although narrow bands of showers continue to push across the Sierra into Mono County, and across northeast CA.

For today through Thursday morning, the main low is projected to remain offshore from the Pacific NW coast, while weak shortwaves and narrow bands of Pacific moisture continue to move across the Sierra. Most of the precip will remain near the Sierra and into northeast CA but overall amounts in these areas should be light, ranging from a few hundredths of an inch to 0.25" each day through Wednesday. Snow levels dip to between 9000-9500 feet this morning so a few flurries or a light dusting may show up on higher peaks around the Tahoe basin. For lower elevations, mostly cloudy conditions will prevail with more sparse showers producing minimal measurable rainfall (trace amounts up to less than 0.10") through early Thursday. Winds on both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake will edge upward into Lake Wind Advisory levels again this afternoon as 700 mb flow near 30 kt and a weak shortwave passage will lead to another day of chilly and choppy lake conditions.

For Thursday-Friday, the low finally heads inland with more of the guidance favoring the center dropping southward across CA/NV. The timing and track still have some details to be sorted out, but given the increased forcing associated with this low`s passage, shower and isolated t-storm chances are poised to increase again. Currently, the highest probabilities (25-40%) extend from the eastern Sierra northward across west central NV, with lesser chances extending across the Reno-Carson-Tahoe areas and northward to Lassen County and the OR border. We may see a brief drying trend by this weekend, although another weak low could drop in from the north and keep low-end shower chances going.

Temperatures will remain below average for the upcoming week with highs mainly in the mid 60s-lower 70s for lower elevations and upper 50s-mid 60s for Sierra communities. Chilly overnight lows will prevail with lows mainly in the 30s near the Sierra and 40s for lower elevations. There is increased potential for freezing temps in Sierra valleys and mid-upper 30s with patchy frost for typically cooler lower elevation sites by this weekend when overall cloud cover decreases. .AVIATION...

Breezy winds with gusts around 25 kt will return this afternoon, then ease back to near 20 kt for Wednesday afternoon for the Tahoe area and western NV terminals, with slightly lower winds for KMMH. With FL100 winds in the 35-45 kt range at times through Wednesday, areas of mountain wave turbulence and occasional LLWS will continue around the Tahoe area and far western NV terminals.

While mainly VFR conditions prevail through midweek, cloud cover will persist especially for the Tahoe area and far western NV terminals. Occasional light rain showers may bring brief reductions to MVFR CIGS mainly for KTVL/KTRK, along with mountain top obscurations at times which could extend into far western NV. MJD
