.DISCUSSION...

As of this writing, fast-moving showers are progressing in a south to north fashion over the Basin and Range. Showers will continue to linger through the morning hours, wrapping up in far N Washoe county after daybreak, at least per latest CAM guidance. Speaking of recent CAM guidance, showers and thunderstorms will be the most widespread today, populating along the Sierra as early as noon today before progressing northeast. As of now, there is a 30-60% chance areawide. The item that may throw a wrench in these plans is if cloud cover from the overnight showers lingers long enough into the morning hours. This could reduce the daytime heating required to get thunderstorms going in the afternoon. Regardless, make sure to keep an eye to the skies!

Eyes in the skies (cameras up at Mammoth Mountain) continue to show smoke from the Garnet Fire infiltrating the area. Like yesterday, smoke may lift in the morning hours before settling back down. The latest HRRR is trying to hint at that smoke lifting in the morning, too. As such, the Dense Smoke Advisory will be allowed to continue until 11 AM this morning.

Afternoon high temperatures will be the coolest of the week today, with highs in the low 70s across W NV valleys and the low-to-mid 60s for Sierra communities. We start to warm up back to near normal, albeit still ~5 degrees cooler than normal, by this weekend. Afternoon shower chances continue Thursday and Friday, but will be lesser each day. We`ll dry out briefly Saturday before another shortwave trough of the coast of CA brings shower canches Sunday and at least Monday. There`s still plenty of uncertainty on how the low will shake out so stay tuned as we get closer.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions expected for all terminals for the majority of today except for KMMH again today, where smoke continues to impact visibilities. Afternoon gusts to 20 kts may help to alleviate some smoke but as they die back down this evening, smoke will be allowed to filter into KMMH again. Thus, KMMH will experience LIFR/IFR conditions with slantwise visibilities continuing to be a concern.

KTRK/KTVL may see brief visibility reductions from brief heavy rain showers and thunderstorms today. Gusty winds from thunderstorm outflows may bring sudden wind shifts as well.
